The subject of death is often met with malice and animosity - almost taboo - in a society that exalts life and vivacity. Believing that there must be a counter-revolution to this antagonistic view about the end of life, author Teresa Straley Lambert puts together "The ABCs of Gravestone Symbols," (published by Xlibris) a one-of-its-kind children's book that aims to familiarize and educate kids on the reality of death and develop a more liberal view to pave open-minded avenues for conversations on the subject.

"The ABCs of Gravestone Symbols" is an alphabetized collection of gravestone symbols from the cemeteries of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, Florida, Kentucky, England and France. It contains photographs of the symbols, information on where they were taken and accompanying verses that explain the meaning of each symbol in a brilliantly-constructed poetic style.

Through this book, the author hopes to open readers' eyes to the shared meanings of death across cultures, the different interpretations of afterlife and why it should not be taken as something eerie or terrifying.

"Cemeteries and death need not be scary, forbidden topics," says Lambert. "In interpreting meanings of such symbols as angels, hands, or lambs, readers can perhaps begin to understand a bit of the history of gravestone carvings. It may encourage them to actually visit cemeteries, looking for symbols on the stones, which, in turn, may lead to a more comfortable image of cemeteries and open avenues for conversations about death."

About the Author
Teresa Straley Lambert, a teacher of gifted students for nearly 30 years, discovered upon retiring that her hobbies of photography, travel, writing and genealogy have turned into a second career. A member of the Ohio chapter and the national organization of the Association of Gravestone Studies, she is now focusing (excuse the pun) on cemeteries and their care, restoration and preservation, along with studying gravestone symbols and their meanings. Residing in Findlay, Ohio, with her husband of 40 years, Lambert holds bachelor's degrees in elementary education and secondary social studies and a master's degree in gifted education - all from Bowling Green State University. Her other hobbies include reading (she's been a member of a book club for over 30 years), bicycling and herb gardening. As a member of Findlay's Gaslight Gallery Artist Co-op for the past several years, she has been able to share her love of photography and travel and also has earned awards in many area photo shows/competitions.
