THE MIRROR OF SOCRATES is Released

OTTAWA, Ontario - In his new book, "The Mirror of Socrates: Twelve Essays of a Reader on World Literature" (published by Archway Publishing), author Tibor Schatteles examines seminal works of literature in scholarly detail, sharing his thoughts, ideas and interpretations in a collection of essays that invites readers to engage in their own literary analysis and discussion.

In Plato's "Republic," Socrates claims that art and literature do nothing but imitate things that already exist. According to Socrates, this imitation acts as a mirror, but does not enrich knowledge.

Schatteles' essays are meant to contradict the popular notion of "art imitates life." The philosophical implications of the subject are discussed in detail in the two introductions, while the essays themselves "exemplify the negation of the Socratic arguments" by showing how authors and their characters are carrying that "Mirror of Socrates" and discovering things which scientific/philosophical precision cannot reveal and express.

A wide range of literature dating back to the ancient Greeks is reviewed, readers being invited to study anew the works of Shakespeare, Cervantes, Chekhov, Joyce, Proust, Musil, Kafka and other notable figures as examples of carrying the, this time, revealing "Mirror of Socrates." Some essays, such as the one on Robert Musil, concentrate on the manner in which "scientific minds" carry and use the "Mirror."

Schatteles says: "I believe that the reader will find a good - and new - introduction to re-reading from a new angle some works he already knows, i.e. 'imitating' the author as 'imitator'. As for the works he does not yet know, I hope to offer a good introduction."
