ALOR SETAR, Malaysia

"I've realized that probably most or all of the stories in the genre told the story of somebody who was different from others," said author Quark Wells. "The heroes had their own special powers that made them different from others. But this is not so in reality." He became intrigued by the idea and decided to subvert this trope in heroic fiction in his debut novel, "The Key of Silence" (published by Xlibris AU), where the main protagonist is just an ordinary person.

V is an ordinary girl living a far from ordinary life. She lives with a pixie and shape shifter, and she goes to an all-boy school disguised as a boy. But all of this is nothing to the extraordinary things up in store for her when a school break trip with her crush leads her down a sinister path revealing deep connections between her and Quark City, a giant space city travelling around the galaxy. In "The Key of Silence," V finds herself in a perilous adventure as the more sinister forces lurking behind the city's secrets give her a welcome home.

Written to take the spotlight on the average person with regular abilities and talents, the story follows V who does not have any 'special' ability of her own and tends to cause more mistakes than others, but this does not stop her from embarking on her own adventure.

This book is about expectations in a competitive society, as well as people using their abilities for selfish purposes, to gain power and wealth. Wells feels that this would allow readers to realize that one does not need to be extraordinary to make a difference. It is about chasing one's dreams, hard work and perseverance.
