STRAFFORD, Mo.

The river of time only flows one way. So can the perspectives, beliefs and values of one's forbearers. With the aid of a cultural mediator, intergeneration stories can preserve one's heritage.

Ruth Burgess' "Spirited Sisters" (published by Xlibris) offers a model for the study of six generations of family past and present. These address hope as well as loving kindness in the midst of death and adversity. From the Jewish immigrant, the prairie women, the old Southern high brow, the seamstress and the fervent Pentecostal missionary mother, all used strategic problem solving strategies.

Each chapter is dedicated to a granddaughter. "Spirited Sisters" is a testament to how mentoring can last beyond a lifetime as the values and the wisdom of past generations are passed on to the next.

About the Author
Ruth Burgess was born to Ted and Estelle Vassar. Poona, India, was their new home 8000 miles from the red dirt of North Texas and the rolling Osage Hills of Oklahoma. World War II and health concerns required this family to remain in the United States until 1947, when they returned to India. Burgess' mission has been to work on issues of social justice and to preserve family heritage for future generations.
