In "My Spirit Is Like the Eagle" (published by Balboa Press), the new book of poems by Roy Forrester, readers are treated to a diverse collections of poems meant to evoke bliss, laughter, relaxation and - he hopes - a new appreciation of poetry.

"My Spirit Is Like the Eagle" is a book of 80 poems in which Forrester has crafted each poem so that it is as different from the rest - in style or structure, rhyme, rhythm or content - as is possible. "With 80 poems, that is quite a task," he says.

Forrester has Parkinson's disease, and it has changed his world dramatically. What began as a poem to his wife expressing his love for her has turned into a dynamic collection of poetry on many different topics, from love and passion to humour. He also writes of the frustrations he encounters with his disease.

An excerpt from the poem "Oh! Such Beauty":

"Oh! Such beauty, It astounds me,
stirring my gut all a-tingle with raw anticipation
Come, hold yourself against me.
Let me feel the warm softness of your body
through your flimsy summer dress
and let me fill my nostrils with the aroma of your hair."

Forrester has carefully chosen the title of each poem so that it indicates the content of the poem, and the poems all fit into a variety of different categories. "There are almost as many categories and styles as there poems," he says. "Some are romantic, some are philosophic and some are even autobiographical in nature."
