LAKEVILLE, Minn.

At age 7, author Ron Greiner was bedridden with rheumatic fever when he read adventure stories such as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Between his family having a cabin behind a levee on the Mississippi in Iowa, and moving to a resort on Leech Lake in Minnesota at age 11, he developed a love of water and a passion for boating.

Greiner now invites readers to grab a paddle and join him on his journey in his new memoir "North, South, East, West by Water" (published by Archway Publishing), in which he details the ups and downs of his 16,000-mile journey.

"My father often showed silent 8mm videos of his hunting and fly-in fishing trips in Ontario, Canada, so, somewhat naturally, that adventurous streak carried through to me," Greiner says.

Greiner initially planned on only boating the length of the Mississippi, but in doing so found that his sense of adventure was still strong. He continued for another 11 years, and in the process touched on 33 states and two Canadian Providences.

"I boated from the Atlantic to the Pacific, lacking less than three-hundred miles from making a true connection by water, which makes up East West," Greiner says. "I also covered all but about ten miles of going by water from Lake Winnipeg, Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico, making up North South, with other rivers not connected with going North South East West travelled just for the adventure of doing so."

Throughout "North, South, East, West by Water," Greiner tells readers the thrilling and true story of his journey. Using a sea kayak, canoe - paddled and motorized - inflatable Zodiac and a small open bow runabout, Greiner's experience is as exhilarating as it is arduous.

"A common thread throughout all the years and various waterways he traveled is the people met along the way," Greiner says. "Their help and stories that I've tried to interweave within the book is what I believe makes this a universal read."
