SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ Dr. Edward Dreyfus's first children's book draws upon his five decades of experience as a psychologist helping people discover their full potential. "Mickey and the Plow Horse" puts readers in the shoes of 12-year-old Mickey Branfield, a shy and lonely boy with asthma who is more comfortable with technology than with people until an unexpected encounter helps him see the world differently. Though written for tweens it is appropriate for all ages including adults. "Mickey and the Plow Horse" is available in paperback from Amazon.

Asthma prevents Mickey from participating in team sports or even romping around the neighborhood with kids his age, isolating him from his peers. His parents' solution is to send him to a summer camp. At camp, Mickey discovers that he can communicate telepathically with a plow horse named Jackson, and the two begin exchanging images from their own lives. Mickey learns that Jackson began life as a thoroughbred racehorse, but poor treatment led him to lose faith in himself.

As a long-time psychologist and life coach, Dr. Dreyfus's foray into fiction and screenplay writing is a big career shift but one that makes sense on closer examination. Fiction is at its most powerful when it's "true" in the sense that readers can relate to the characters on the page or screen. And who better to understand people and their motivations, as well as communicate them, than a psychologist with a lifetime of experience and knowledge?

"Though written for teens, 'Mickey and the Plow Horse' was inspired by the adults with whom I have worked," explained Dr. Dreyfus. "Mickey, like so many people today, feels downtrodden by convention and lacks confidence in his ability to follow through on his dreams. This book is dedicated to everyone who wishes to discover the thoroughbred that lies within waiting to run free."

"Mickey has that awful sense of not quite fitting in which, if continued into adulthood, can lead to an unfulfilled, unsatisfying existence," added Dr. Dreyfus. "My hope with 'Mickey and the Plow Horse' is to take the focus away from external achievements and emphasize personal development in all of its individual forms."

Dr. Dreyfus asks readers to look for his next book, "Buddies," which will be released in January 2015.
