For author Patricia Teague, living gluten-free has been a way of life for two of her three children were diagnosed with celiac disease (CD), an autoimmune disorder set off by foods with gluten, which damages the small intestine. In her new book, "Gilda the Gluten Free Mouse: A Story About Living Gloriously With Celiac Sprue Disease" (published by WestBow Press), Teague helps children cope with and understand CD through the story of an adorable mouse.

In the first book of the planned Gilda series, readers are introduced to an inquisitive young mouse named Gilda, who is always getting sick. Her parents are stumped at first, but they soon realize that Gilda has CD, an autoimmune disorder set off by foods with gluten.

To help Gilda, Mother Mouse learns to cook delicious gluten-free meals. Teague includes a gluten-free recipe in the back of the book for readers to make on their own.

The Celiac Support Association estimates that one in 133 people have CD. Through Gilda's adventures, Teague hopes to bring awareness to CD and help children cope with living gluten-free at home, school and on vacation.

"The book is a fun and informative way for children to relate to the disease," writes Teague, "and for others to understand the difficulties of living gluten free."
