BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - The United Nations estimates 7.6 million people have been internally displaced because of the Syrian War. Beyond these numbers are stories of men, women and children desperately seeking to escape the unfolding violence and devastation.

Author Maurice Nachtigal knows the plight of the Syrian refugee. He and his family fled the Iron Curtain in 1980 and began the long, arduous journey of rebuilding their lives in a strange, new country across the world. He continues the story of this journey in "An Iron Curtain Breakaway: From Romania to America Part 2" (published by Xlibris).

Nachtigal was born in Bucharest in 1933 to a Jewish middle-class family. In 1980, Nachtigal, his wife, Sidonia and their children, Noel and Alina, left for America in order to escape Romania's totalitarian regime. The second book in his two-part memoir, "An Iron Curtain Breakaway" charts the struggles and sacrifices of this ordinary family and how they overcame incredible odds through love, trust and perseverance.

"An Iron Curtain Breakaway" is a powerful true story of survival and family set against the grim backdrop of a nation in unrest. Nachtigal's account is an eye-opening look into the hopes and fears of refugees. Above all, it is a triumphant testament of the indomitable human spirit.
