COLD SPRING, N.Y.

Curling up with a good book creates a cozy atmosphere for readers of any age. Raven Howell easily achieves this feat with her new collection of 28 poems for young children, released by Dog Ear Publishing. Here, everyday occurrences take on new meaning as this poetry conjures serene memories and tranquil, memorable images.

In "Dozy Poems, Cozy Days: Poems to Calm the Active Child," Howell shares her thoughts on subjects ranging from puppies, car rides and thunder, to strawberries, autumn napping and dream catchers. The melodies of her poems read like lullabies and help build a cozy space representing all four seasons of the year. The selection "Cricket's Chirp" poses the whimsical theory that perhaps a cricket's monotonous song is actually just the insect snoring, while "Some Days Even the Sun is Sleepy" describes a sleepy-eyed day when the sun grabs handfuls of gray clouds to cover up and hide. Warm and whimsical watercolor illustrations by Maris Howell add delightful splashes of color to the poems.

Award-winning writer Raven Howell is a three-time recipient of the Letter of Merit Magazine award for poetry awarded by the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Her poems appear in children's magazines such as Cricket, Ladybug, Highlights for Children, Jack and Jill, and Boy's Quest, as well as in book anthologies and on DVDs. She and her husband live in Cold Spring, N.Y., with their sons. This is the first collaboration for illustrator Maris Howell with his mother. An accounting major in college, he nonetheless enjoys the creativity in art, music and movies.
