"Gun Violence, Disability and Recovery" (published by Xlibris AU) documents the many hardships faced by gun violence survivors worldwide. This work comes from the global Surviving Gun Violence Project. It aims to raise awareness on the complex subject and those deeply affected by it - those permanently injured and traumatized by gunshot wounds.

Drawing from an abundance of research material and interviews with survivors and professionals across a range of fields, it presents a portrait of family dependence, social exclusion, emotional and physical hardship, and reduced economic prospects for those injured and traumatized. According to the book, many survivors face inaccessibility, unavailability or inadequacy of basic medical attention, rehabilitation and social support systems. With the growing population, survivors already number tens of millions worldwide, the failures of assistance measures presents a range of human rights challenges, and socioeconomic problem for many nations.

José Ramos-Horta, Nobel Peace Laureate, former President of Timor-Leste, and survivor, writes in the foreword: "Survivors have needs that must be addressed. More than needs, they have rights: the right to the best attainable standards of health, the right to live independently, and the right to participate fully in all aspects of life. These rights have implications for specific services, as well as for the broader social environment in which survivors live."

"Gun Violence, Disability and Recovery" calls for a reassessment of how survivors are treated by society, alleging that governments often fail to respect the rights of survivors to adequate treatment, rehabilitation, justice system guidance, as well as basic guarantees of physical access and non-discrimination for those experiencing disability.

Through http://www.survivinggunviolence.org/book the book can be downloaded as an e-book, PDF or ordered as a paperback. Uniquely, 100% of the payments received for the book are going to the Transitions Foundation in Guatemala, an inspiring organisation working with next to no sustained funding, established by survivors of violence working directly with people injured and impaired from gun violence, as well as people living with disability more broadly. The Director, Alex Gálvez, shot and paralysed at the age of 14, is on the cover of the book.
