Authors and educators William C. Knaak and Jean T. Knaak present a critical analysis of the failures and shortcomings of American education in their new nonfiction, "Teach the Best and Stomp the Rest: The American Schools...Guilty as Charged?" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"We have a deep concern for the improved education of a majority of the children in the United States and its impact on the nation," the authors write. "The purpose of the book is to emancipate and elevate the 'forgotten half' of American students and to enhance the 'chosen students.'"

According to the authors, radical changes to the educational system must start at the federal level. They propose the development of a transformed infrastructure in economic, educational and ecologic governance and recognize the importance of embracing the education of all the nation's children, youth and adults. "This book has pursued that end," they note.

"Teach the Best and Stomp the Rest" goes beyond identifying the failures of American schools and looks deeper into the reasons behind them. The authors discuss the failed initiatives of additional funding, class size reduction, magnet schools, vouchers, merit pay for teachers, charter schools, private corporate management and more.

"There is a growing understanding in America that the nation is foundering in an economic, educational and ecologic malaise," the Knaaks write. "This book provides answers to several of these issues."
