"The Gift" is a story of two sisters - Judy, who is six years old and Kitty, who is four. The story addresses issues such as sibling rivalry, jealousy, bargaining for toys, yet a crisis in the family proves that despite all these natural childhood phenomena, the sisters have profound love for each other. This book is centered on the importance of family and teaching children to empathize and share.

This book appeals to adults and children. Parents of young children understand why children behave in certain ways, and they reflect on their own experiences when they were young. Listening to the story, young children make comments on their own experiences. This book promotes a dialogue between parents, teachers, and children.

Ego, rivalry, and jealousy are natural, but if left unresolved have the potential to disrupt relationships. Author Meenakshi Mohan believes that if only people can develop more understanding and empathy for each other, the world would be a more harmonious place.
