Independent Bookstore Day is May 2nd and Bookworks will be celebrating with several special promotions for its valued customers. On Independent Bookstore Day, Bookworks will launch a new loyalty program, The Book Brood, whereby customers can sign up for a punch card that gets them a 30% discount after attending ten events. Bookworks will also be starting a delivery service in Albuquerque city limits and Rio Rancho, where store employees will delivery books to customers. Also on Independent Bookstore Day, a book giveaway-a Blind Date with a Book-will have its own section in the store. Come check out these special promos and see two local authors,Carolyn Meyer, with her new kids book on the Harvey Girls, Diary of a Waitress, at 10:30 am and David Thurlo, local mystery writer with a new book, Grave Consequences, at 3pm. Limited edition Independent Bookstore Day tote bags will also be available for purchase May 2.

Anne Hillerman has a new Leaphorn and Chee mystery, Rock with Wings, on sale May 5. That night, Bookworks will host a fundraiser for the Albuquerque Public Library Foundation at the South Broadway Cultural Center. Admission is $5 and all proceeds go to the library foundation. Kiera Cass, popular young adult author of the Selection series, visits May 12 with a new book, The Heir. In The Heir,Princess Eadlyn must win the heart of Prince Maxon. Bookworks is having a tiara contest in conjunction with the event, so design and wear your winning tiara!

Arizona author, poet, and independent bookstore owner, Michaela Carter, reads from a new acclaimed novel, now in paperback, Further Out Than You Thought, on May 9.

Mothers' Day features include Listen to Your Mother, Sunday, May 3, 2pm at Albuquerque Aca-demy and a launch of the new La Vida Llena anthology, Turning Points in Women's Lives, May 9.

The life and works of Edward Abbey is the feature of two events in May: May 3, David Gessner brings his book, All the Wild That Remains, to Bookworks. Gessner looks at the life of Abbey, alongside fellow western environmentalist, Wallace Stegner, from their respective birthplaces and throughout their lives. On May 16, Sean Prentiss, author ofFinding Abbey, tries to find the burial place of Abbey-and himself-in a new creative biography/memoir from UNM Press.

Southwestern culture and landscape are an important part of the May calendar, with Ashley Biggers visiting May 14with a new guide book, 100 Things to Do in Albuquerque Before Your Die. On May 26, Rachel Preston Prinz talks about her work and book, Hacking the Earthship, a guide to the planning, building, and culture of living in an earth structure. On May 20, Craig Smith looks at the Santa Fe opera and its mastermind, John Crosby, in his new UNM Press bio, Vision of Voices.
