What botanists Larry and Carol Peterson have done is to take common observations of plants and present scientific explanations in a way that non-specialists can understand. A brilliant stroke by the authors is to condense all this information into a 130-page book with a question-and-answer format. Want to know why some onions make you cry? Or why birch bark makes the best canoes? It's all here, and it's designed to spark the interest of everyone between the ages of eight and 80.

The book is divided into categories, and the answer to each question is illustrated with high-resolution photographs. The logical and systematic presentation is no surprise: the Petersons come by their teaching chops naturally, having previously collaborated on the book "Teaching Plant Structure Through Creative Laboratory Exercises," for which they were awarded the Lawson Medal from the Canadian Botanical Association for an outstanding contribution to the field of botany.

This is a one-of-a-kind book that you leave on the coffee table for guests to peruse, as well as keeping it for a handy reference guide. This book is so absorbingly informative that you may find yourself unable to put it down.

Oh, and the answer to the title question is: when what we call a flower, as in sunflowers and daisies, is actually a group of many small flowers or when colourful modified leaves as in poinsettas and flamingo plants are through to be parts of the flower.

Author Biography: Alberta born Larry and Carol Peterson received degrees in botany from the University of Alberta and the University of California. Both had teaching and research careers in Ontario at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo, respectively.
