"Many people still like the old school ways of detectives and secret agents," says author Fiona Donovan. "There is a certain air of uncertainty when things are done without the help of modern day techniques," Donovan continues. She delivered on this kind of mood and atmosphere with her first book, "The Pick Up" while also introducing readers to the intriguing CIA contract assassin, John O'Bryan. Now, Donovan takes readers back to the beginning of O'Bryan's spy career in her second book, "The Beginning" (published by Xlibris).

The prequel to "The Pick Up," "The Beginning" takes readers back to the 1970s to follow O'Bryan's every step as he goes through his grueling training at the infamous Farm, the CIA training camp. The story offers a rare glimpse into the very secretive world of intelligence as he develops from a cocksure know-it-all to become the mature and confident agent that readers got to know in the first book.

After his training, the story picks up with O'Bryan's first mission: He and his team are tasked with taking down a particularly nefarious terror group bent on stirring up an international wave of terror and destruction of an unprecedented scale. He travels to Canada and the Philippines as his soul is drawn to the true core of evil in the course of his mission.

An engrossing spy thriller, "The Beginning" addresses the many questions readers posed to Donovan with regards to O'Bryan. Here, they are shown a real person with morals and ethics despite the emotionally and psychologically arduous, and likely damaging, challenges the he is expected to overcome; it is a fascinating look into the mind and heart of an intelligence operative.
