In his 2012 book, "The Civil War Journals of Col. Homer A. Plimpton 1861 - 1865" (published by Trafford Publishing), John L. Dodson shares the personal journals of Homer A. Plimpton, who joined the 39th Volunteer Regiment of Illinois in 1861 and rose from Private to Colonel of the regiment.

The journals follow Plimpton's travels across the country, from Illinois to West Virginia, to North Carolina and more, ending up at Appomattox, Va. He shares his insights concerning the conditions of warfare, the time he met President Lincoln, his opinions on Mary Todd Lincoln, working with the founder of the Red Cross, Sara Barton, and expresses his feelings on the Union generals who commanded him.

"I want readers to have a better understanding of the Civil War and its impact on today's conflicts," Dodson says. "I want them to gain knowledge of the cost and destruction this war had on lives and the national sense of purpose. I want them to see what a true hero looks like and how devotion to a cause is valuable. I want them to feel what life was like for a soldier in the Civil War."

"The Civil War Journals of Col. Homer A. Plimpton 1861 - 1865" was displayed at the 2012 California Library Association Annual Conference.
