Author Jenny Lea takes readers into a walk down history lane with her publication, "Malela." In this vibrantly illustrated book, they will embark on a journey with Malela, a young boy who will show them the rich culture that once flourished in the plains of Africa. They will get a glimpse of the strong link that future generations have to the past.

"Malela" is the story of a Zulu child growing up on a farm in the Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga), in the early decades of the last century. It shows typical family life of the Zulu people, and of their meeting with people of European culture. The book chronicles Malela's childhood, painting a vivid picture of life in the kraal. It touches on the people's way of life, including tending animals, crafts and developing valuable skills in order to survive. It also shows how European culture slowly seeps into the local life and gradually becomes more the norm to some extent.

In its simplicity, the book will appeal to young readers. Through this, they will be able to identify elements of the text in the drawings. This will also appeal to older people, as the historical aspect of the book will pique their interest. The charming drawings will appeal to everyone, regardless of age. The drawings are the works of artist, Henry Lea which inspired the author, his granddaughter to use them in showcasing a little bit of history. They show an authentic and unbiased look at life at the time.

Through the pages of "Malela," readers will develop a better understanding of the life in rural South Africa during those days.

"I believe knowledge of history gives a larger perspective to modern life. It helps us to understand who we are, by showing us where we come from," Lea shares.
