SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine

A brother-and-sister set of twins receives a mysterious gift upon their seventeenth birthday. But the gift is something they never expected and would never have wished for, if given a choice. This is the gift of witchcraft.

In the new fantasy thriller by Jeffrey Ouellette, "Dark Origins: The Witch and the Warlock" (published by iUniverse), Sadie and Mason Peabody must harness their inherited magical powers to defeat a group of evil witches.

"Dark Origins" is a coming-of-age tale of the twins Sadie and Mason. The pair is selected through ancestry to inherit these magical powers, originally wielded by the first witches in modern society.

The twins' ancestors manipulated the delivery of their magical powers, distributed over generations, until the arrival of the twins. With this new ability, they must overcome the forces of evil and restore power to the righteous. Ouellette says his book stands in a class of its own, using a new twist on the traditional witch-and-warlock tale.

An excerpt from "Dark Origins":

"'Is that Mason's voice?' I sensed the need to get down to the basement quickly. No sooner did the thought cross my mind, I felt the floor at my feet shift and drop down four inches. I panicked for a moment and tried to lift my feet up out of the floorboards, but they were trapped between them. I took a deep breath in and exhaled slowly, but there was nothing I could do as the kitchens hardwood floor continued to absorb my body inch by inch. What in the world is happening? I must be dreaming."
