James E. Smith Sr. was born in the 1940s and has since experienced the changes the world has undergone in the decades leading through the turn of the century. Smith invites readers to experience these changes through his eyes in his new autobiography, "A Grandfather's Gift: Papaw's Life and Times in Rural Mississippi" (published by AuthorHouse).

Smith begins his book by taking readers to 1940s Jefferson County in Mississippi. Throughout his book, Smith recounts the ways people dressed, citing the many changes that have taken place in wardrobe throughout his life. He also emphasizes the ways and frequency in which social gatherings used to take place, noting that technology has had a drastic effect on socialization.

Smith expands the horizons of his book by also recalling numerous stories he heard on countless front porches over the years. By allowing others' stories to be present in his book, he is hopeful that he will paint an all-encompassing - but fair - picture of the changes in society throughout his lifetime.

Smith hopes his book will not only provide further insight into society and its many changes, but also encourage readers to live a relaxing and full life.
