J N Pratley Pens A MANIA OF LOVE

Plato proclaims two kinds of mania: one arising from disease, the other from love. "A Mania of Love" by J.N. Pratley is the latter.

"A Mania of Love" finds Clarence Nelson, a bipolar classic professor, escaping to the Greek Island of Hydra intending to complete his novel on the Greek poet, Archilochus of Paros. Instead, he finds himself involved in a torrid affair with a French waitress. Slowly Clarence's life begins to resemble that of Archilochus when his mistress threatens his marriage and wife. With his paradise collapsing around him, Clarence resorts to a violent solution, justified by his belief in the Asklepius principle of death-life transformations. Now his fate lies in the hands of the Athens Inspector, who will have to determine the price of Clarence's infidelity.

"With A Mania of Love, I wanted to tell a story where several different themes-love, death psychology, philosophy-are explored simultaneously," Pratley said. "At the same time, I didn't want to instruct readers on how they should feel regarding any singular topic. I deal with these themes in some unconventional ways, hopefully leaving readers questioning their own stance on some of these concepts."

Pratley's fictional work walks the line between fantasy and reality as he delves deep into the culture, history and mythology of the Greek Islands. "A Mania of Love" challenges the ideas of marital infidelity and justification for murder, highlighting the imperfections of human nature.

About the author
J N Pratley received his doctorate in cell biology from the University of Texas before continuing in his field as a professor at San Jose State University. Pratley has penned two other novels inspired by his love and study of Greek culture titled, "Leto's Journey" and "The Green Helix." Pratley currently resides outside of Houston in Galveston, Texas.
