ANCHORAGE, Alaska

Born into the upper class of the Indian caste system, Archana Mishra is part of the 25 percent of Indians who represent the country around the world. Even though she has been able to travel, attain an education and gain a global perspective, Mishra thinks something is not quite right.

Her book, "The Fortunate Child," combines Mishra's notes, observations and opinions from her international travels into an enchanting story of a girl who dreams of using education to bring equality to her community.

Much like Mishra, her protagonist longs to bring schooling and opportunities to everyone. In a society where women and lower classes face injustice, prejudice and educational barriers, her story provides hope that education may become available to the masses.

"Education has the power to address a majority of issues in the world today," Mishra said. "Writing this book has given me the opportunity to progress from believing in this cause to doing something about it."

While stories about India are often written by foreign travelers or those at the receiving end of social wrongdoings, Mishra provides a unique insight into the life of person born into a privileged, upper-caste family with an acute sense of justice and equality for all.

Through this thought-provoking novel, readers are introduced to a fortunate girl who works to bring the fortune of beneficial education to every child in India.
