Author Kim Moretto Niemeier shares that her father did not talk much about his experiences during the Second World War. Fifty years since that worldwide event, her father finally opened up and shared stories of his flying and combat missions over Germany and France. That instance fueled her desire to learn more of her father's past experiences "In the Hands of Strangers" (published by Xlibris). This memoir is Niemeier's love letter to her father.

Niemeier's father, Fred Moretto, was a U.S. fighter pilot who has been there during the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 12, 1944. During the fight, Moretto was ambushed by German Messerschmitt 109s. Barely escaping his burning P-47 Thunderbolt, Lt. Moretto parachutes into the French countryside where villagers working for the Resistance conceal him from the Germans for two months in a bread oven, a secret perch in an attic and a hayloft.

In 1993, nearly 50 years later, Kim convinces her father to return to France. Reuniting with the people and the places where he survived against all odds, re-invigorates his French connection and launches Kim's 20-year odyssey to uncover the dramatic details of her father's inspiring story.

By reliving the experiences of her father and sharing what he has learned while he was "In the Hands of Strangers," Niemeier hopes readers will see one of the many tales during the Second World War. This tales is one of true courage and heroism - all resulting in multi-decade and multi-generational friendships.

"It is my great pleasure to share my father and the brave Desmares and Goimbault families (and others) with readers," the author says. "I want them to never forget the cost of war on countries and militaries and get a sense that love and human decency can overcome even the most difficult of situations."
