SAINT-PONS-DE-THOMIÈRES, France

Poet Maryvonne May has been writing poems for more than 40 years. Her new poetry collection, "Hither and Thither" (published by Trafford Publishing), gathers together four decades of poetry and reflects on May's unique worldview.

The poems within "Hither and Thither" describe places that May visited or worked in, family and friends, social issues, and childhood memories. May shares her experiences of living in shanty towns in Nigeria and Brazil and spending time on pristine college campuses. Some of May's poetry represents nostalgia, while newer poems speak of her impressions of the modern world.

Many of the poems take on a format May refers to as a "modern sonnet form." The rhythm within the poetry draws from British folk music. May states her poems were meant to be read aloud.

An excerpt from the poem "Doomed Cherry Blossom":

"'Plant cherries', said the Ministry,
Forgetting the fearsome Saintes Glaces,
That nip young flowers in the bud.
And can destroy the cherry crop.
Still I've seen and felt the wonder,
Shining cherry blossom at dusk."
