Graham Dukes Shares Classic Nursery Rhymes in New Book

Everyone knows the stories of Little Jack Horner, Mary, Mary Quite Contrary and Little Bo-Beep, but not everyone imagines them in the same way that author Graham Dukes has imagined them.

Dukes gives his characters a modern makeover, crafting relatable characters that have real-world problems. The Queen of Hearts with her tarts becomes a 21st-century feminist who regards the tarts as young ladies who need to be reformed. Meanwhile, Tom the piper's son finds out what will happen to him if he steals a pig in the modern age.

Like many nursery rhymes and classic fables, "Nursery Rhymes for an Improvable World" satirizes present-day problems through fiction, tackling subjects such as bureaucracy, commercialism, environmental problems and atomic weapons. Dukes approaches these topics with wit and a sharp sense of humor, finding the jokes in serious matters.
