Set in the Victorian era, the new young adult novel by author Erica Sehyun Song, "Thorns in the Shadow" (published by Archway Publishing), takes main character Lucille Rinehart and her three friends on a journey of self-discovery and newfound destiny.

Narrated by Lucille, the story takes place within a fictional boarding school in the London countryside - the Westerfield Academy for Young Ladies. Lucille and her friends, although they live in the earthly realm, become trapped within a dangerous realm called the Outerworld after a magical pendant is planted on Lucille at a Victorian ball.

"I think readers may be able to relate to some of the scenes in the book where it features typical problems teenagers encounter," Song says. "A lot of teenagers today are influenced by the media's depiction of perfection. I want readers to understand they don't have to follow the unofficial laws society creates, to be liked by others."

An excerpt from "Thorns in the Shadow":

"I knew I should not be picky about libraries, but it seemed so natural. Creaking the door open, I stepped in, kicking up a pile of dust ... As I weaved in between the shelves, I noticed that there were a lot of books which I had never seen in my life. The Spirits and You; 101 Ways of Spiritual Defence; The Leaders, the Formation and Possible Downfall Of."
