Teachers who want to teach Spanish to their young children have a new tool at their disposal. Longtime educator Adriana M. Amaro has written a new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, aimed at teaching children in kindergarten through eighth grade Spanish as well as exposing them to aspects of Spanish culture around the world and in the United States so they can more easily put vocabulary words into context.

"All About Languages! Cultural Lessons Kindergarten through Eighth Grade" pairs vocabulary words with lessons based on Spanish culture, following the school year and featuring a few holidays and observances each month. The author includes such celebrations as St. Patrick's Day, St. Valentine's, Earth Day, Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo. Events that don't take place the same month each year, such as Easter, Hanukkah and Ramadan, also are featured, as well as culturally significant sites such as Machu Picchu, the Alhambra and the Temple of the Sun.

The book features simple lessons geared toward younger students in kindergarten to fourth grade, as well as lessons designed for older students, in fifth to eighth grade. Black and white line drawings and illustrations by Hannah Salyer enhance the text, including those on worksheet pages that can be copied for students to complete.

This is the first book for author Adriana M. Amaro, who has more than 12 years of classroom experience teaching Spanish to students and is president, CEO and owner of All About Languages! She has a master's degree in education from Loyola College in Baltimore and a bachelor's degree from George Washington University. She received an AMI diploma from the Washington Montessori Institute.

Adriana is a native of Argentina and is of Portuguese heritage. At an early age she acquired an aptitude for languages; she is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese. She is especially grateful to her maternal grandfather for teaching her Portuguese and for instilling in her a desire to learn his culture and language.

Dog Ear Publishing reviews are expected for the book later this year. Instructional support coach Ginger Slaughter has this to say about Amaro's book: "All About Languages! Cultural Lessons is a valuable resource for any teacher in grades K-8. Ms. Amaro concisely, yet effectively, shows how to incorporate the importance of culture while learning Spanish. The easy to follow lesson ideas that correlate with the school calendar make this book a "go to" for teachers. Ms. Amaro's included activities can be easily modified to meet the needs of all learners. I can see this being used in classrooms across the country."
