Dr. Pat Keogh, a teacher with a doctorate in education, addresses the importance of creativity to the power of intellect in his new book, "Defining Intelligence: In an Educational Context" (published by AuthorHouse).

"Behavior is not a reflection or manifestation of intellectual processing. Contemplation and intellectualizing are outside the realm of empirical testing methods," Keogh says.

Keogh stresses the importance of creativity in early childhood education. Intelligence involves abstract, purposeful and logical thinking and the ability to create and execute ideas - including unconscious thinking.

"The mind never rests," Keogh says. "Daydreaming - which involves reflection, organizing thoughts and planning - is often seen as idling and time-wasting, but this is not the case."

"Defining Intelligence" relays the message that observing or analyzing behavior, appearance, character traits, beliefs and acquired knowledge should not be used to produce a quantifiable measure of a person's intelligence.
