ORMOND BEACH, Fla.

Since the days of Dr. David Livingstone in the mid-1880s, medical personnel traveled to Africa to extend medical help. In his new publication, "My Summers in West Africa" (published by Xlibris), Dr. Richard D. Evans reveals a helpful guide for those who are planning an expedition to West Africa, giving them the information they need and letting them know what they can expect in a foreign continent.

Based on a journal Evans kept during his three visits to a hospital in Nigeria, this book provides readers with intensive insight into the motivation that drives health care workers to visit Africa. It touches on the quest of medical professionals to satisfy their curiosity regarding the continent, their natural desire to lend a helping hand to their fellow human being and their urge to expand their knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases and the medicines used to treat them. It also gives detailed description of how local physicians overcome many of the obstacles that are presented when treating patients without the benefits of modern technology and modern medicines.

"This book is a must read for any health care worker who is contemplating a medical mission to a third world country," Evans says. "It will provide them with valuable information on how to maintain their own good health while treating some of the world's most contagious ailments. In addition to the patients I treated, there are many entertaining dialogs of interesting individuals I encountered."

Enlightening and insightful, "My Summers in West Africa" is a valuable guide to missionaries, medical personnel and humanitarians who brave the obstacles of providing health care to third world countries.
