Digital First Media today announced The Denver Post and El Paso Times have been honored by the American Society of News Editors 2012 Best Journalism Awards.

The ASNE Awards honor the best in print, online and mobile content. This year's contest featured more than 300 entries across nine categories with Digital First Media receiving three top honors and being named a finalist in a fourth.

The Denver Post was honored for Distinguished Writing Award for Deadline News Reporting for coverage of the Aurora, Colo. Movie theater shooting. Judges cited the Post's "detailed reporting and vivid writing that took readers inside the theater" and called the coverage "comprehensive. The writers sifted through a mountain of information to deliver fresh insights, telling the story in a complete and compelling manner," ASNE judges said.

El Paso Times Editor Bob Moore was named the winner of the Burl Osborne Award for Editorial Leadership. The award, named for the former Dallas Morning News editor and publisher, recognizes editorial writing that is excellent journalism and makes a difference in the community. Mr. Moore was honored for "the remarkable fortitude displayed in his editorials that wouldn't let El Paso's school board and leadership off the hook after they tried to cook the books on standardized testing by having poor-performing students 'disappear' on testing days to make the school's tests scores look better," ASNE judges said.

Denver Post photographer Joe Amon was honored with ASNE's Community Service Photojournalism Award covering the use of heroin in Denver. "Joe Amon gained access to a story and subjects that are tough to find, let along photography. Amon brought to line the persistent problem of drug addiction," ASNE judges said.

The Denver Post's Michael Booth was also named a finalist for ASNE's Distinguished Writing Award for Nondeadline Writing.

"The Denver Post's coverage of the Aurora shootings, the El Paso Times' focus on school board corruption and Joe Amon's photographs depicting heroin use in Denver are just three examples albeit extraordinary ones of the work our journalists do every day," said Jim Brady, Editor-in-Chief for Digital First Media. "We are honored to be recognized by ASNE among a distinguished field and Digital First Media's newsrooms are committed to continuing to deliver the stories that impact the communities we serve."
