According to the Surf Coast Times news, a fishing group have been fined nearly $5,000 last year due to breaking the rules for abalone fishing in Torquay. The charges included: exceeding the catch limit, taking undersize abalone, taking from the intertidal zone, failure to carry a measuring device, and taking abalone during the closed season. This just goes to show how serious the Australian government is in protecting and preserving its marine life. In line with this story, author Dennis J. McTaggart's Cold Gold takes readers to an up-close and personal glimpse into the danger faced by abalone divers on a quest for a mind blowing adventure like no other.

A collection of short stories about abalone diving and the dangers that they face every day in the pursuit of the gifts of the sea, this riveting book is inspired by McTaggart's close encounters with fishermen and abalone divers. This series introduces readers to a group of friends who happen to be abalone poachers, illegally taking and selling abalones without permit. Centered around Victoria and Tasmania in the southern states of Australia, these series of tales features the dangers that the main characters face on a daily basis.

A highly intriguing book that depicts the much darker side of life, along with its fascinating highs and lows, this book caters to those who love a good story of adventure, intertwined with a love for sports. Engaging, this is an ideal tool that allows one to realize how the provisions of marine life can, at times, lead people to the inevitable dangers that nature presents. Indeed, this work will tantalize diving fanatics and sea lovers.

About the Author

Dennis J. McTaggart started life on a farm in the Gippsland Lakes area. He left school at 16 and moved to Traralgon where he worked in electrical retail. His thirst for adventure saw him join the local "skin diving club" where he was offered a job working on an abalone boat out of Mallacoota. He soon took advantage of the affordable abalone licenses in New South Wales and started diving out of Eden. He spent the next years working in under water construction and on building sites all over Australia, eventually ending up in Tasmania diving for abalone. He suffered nitrogen narcosis (the bends) which partly paralysed him. It was during his recovery that he started to recount his adventures. Born in 1950, McTaggart has seen it all. He is a modern, medical miracle. His recovery defied the odds and medical prognosis. He now leads a relatively normal life for a sexagenarian, holed up in the fabled high country in Victoria, Australia.
