The story of a local church from its conception to its demise, "The Rise and Fall of a Parish in the Wilderness:" is a call to preserving local history for the community. In here, historian Danial Walker writes about the people's passion to save one building that has been an essential part of their families for years.

The Our Lady of La Salette was the oldest congregation in the locality. It had quite an unstable beginning in the late 1830s when the people struggled to create a parish. A frame church was built first and then moved to a new location close to the present hamlet of La Salette, Ontario. It had to be replaced after a fire ravaged the church in 1913. In the year 2012, the Diocese of London decided to get rid of the building. The community came together, finally acquiring the historic church in the same year. The book includes information on some of the founding families plus a transcript of the first register for 1853 - 1857. Informative and absorbing, Walker's book is the story of how one church shaped a community, becoming an integral part of families throughout the changes in society.

Writing with surefire knowledge, Walker does justice to this church as he pays homage to its history, focusing on the bond between church and community. This book is also a subtle reminder of how history and religion bring people closer, and how that legacy is continuously threatened at the present time.
