A notorious terrorist threatens to destroy a national monument in author Michael D. Hartley's new mystery thriller, "Deadfall: A Ryan Moar Mystery" (published by Abbott Press).

The world is shocked when an ancient statue of Buddha is blown up. All evidence points to terrorist Habib Khadr, but he quietly disappears. After decades of silence, he surfaces again in Mexico, and he plans to cross into America.

Husband and wife, Ryan and Joanne, are private investigators looking into a suspect's connection with terrorism. While trailing him, they stumble across Habib's path and soon learn of his nefarious plot threatening one of America's most beloved monuments.

"'Deadfall' is a work of mainstream fiction, a page-turning tale that takes the crime story back to its origins in the realistic novel," says Hartley.

An excerpt from "Deadfall":

"The sight of the Buddha mocked him, and he soon dismissed any thoughts of the man he had killed moments ago. He lit the fuse and laid the burning wire with care on the cave floor. He then ran down the hill to the house nestled in the cliff. He pushed his way past the guard and flung open the door. Some soldiers lay curled up on the mud floor, while others sat in a circle and nibbled bones of a goat's carcass. His wild eyes and bloodstained dishdasha startled the young men."
