MARIETTA, Ga., Nov. 13, 2014 /PRNewswire/ Cobb EMC's fifth annual Literacy Week placed focus on students' creativity and life-long reading and writing habits. Books came to life for more than 14,000 area students across 28 schools during the weeklong celebration.

The program, which was held the week of October 27, brought together eight children's book authors and students beyond the electric cooperative's five-county metro Atlanta service area.

"We originally designed this event to encourage students' love of reading and creative writing," said Mark Justice, associate vice president of education and community relations. "Cobb EMC is committed to education, and Literacy Week inspires imaginations and promotes life-long reading habits in a really fun, interactive way."

Guest authors included New York Times bestselling author Brian Lies, national author W.H. Beck and local authors Gail Karwoski, Jenny L. Cote, Diane Shore, Danny Schnitzlein, Jodi Wheeler-Toppen and Kim Hardy.

"Bringing Brian Lies to Addison for Literacy Week helped us motivate our students to find their love for reading and to follow their dreams to become writers much like Brian was inspired by another author when he was a child," said Brad Cohen, assistant principal at Addison Elementary in Marietta, Ga.

Cobb EMC's Literacy Week has reached more than 40,000 students since its inception five years ago.

Since 1938, Cobb EMC has supported the communities within its five-county metro Atlanta service area and continues to focus efforts on literacy through contributions to local organizations and schools.
