"All people go through valleys in their lives," says author Clay Mitchell. "How we react to our negative experiences dictates our direction and defines the quality of our lives."

In "Amid the Ashes and the Dust" (published by iUniverse), Mitchell dives deep below the surface, taking readers from the deep sea to the largest lake in Texas to examine the tragic life of a Texas football legend as he struggles through the dark valley that has consumed his life.

Tyler Morgan loses his faith when his wife and son are killed in a tragic accident. Alone in Port Aransas, he struggles for years through grief and pain trying to run his deep sea diving and fishing company. Upon hearing of his mother's terminal illness, he heads back to the piney woods of East Texas where he learns both his father and his first love have come under attack. Tyler quickly finds himself thrust into an unwanted battle with the ruthless Radcliffe family, and when Space Shuttle Columbia breaks apart upon reentry, an odd turn of events sends him to the bottom of Sam Rayburn Reservoir to search for pieces of the shuttle.

Tyler discovers secrets, both vile and beyond imagination, that have been hidden beneath the lake for the years. Mysteries begin to unravel as he wages battle against his enemies, but the real battle is for his faith.

An excerpt from "Amid the Ashes and the Dust":

"'I know you're feeling angry and cheated right now, Tyler, but you have to gather your faith. Now is the time for prayer. Pray for her. Ask God to help her." He pulled at his shirt and looked around for something to punch. "God? What God?'"

About the Author
Texas native, Clay Mitchell was raised in Houston and currently lives in San Antonio where he is the owner of Over the Top Window Fashions. Mitchell's love of fiction writing, fishing and his first hand experience with the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster have combined to produce his first book, "Amid the Ashes and the Dust." With two more books soon to be released, Mitchell's engrossing and poetic style of fiction will continue to examine the relationship of man to his creator, but will expand into the mystical and philosophical realms as he explores the possibilities of old souls, soul mates and eternal love in his upcoming series, Half-Past Eternity.
