PALM DESERT, Calif.

When author Geoff Berman was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 60, he started recording nearly every thought he had in his journal. Writing helped him cope and make sense of the disease.

Berman's new book, "The Sun Is Up, I'm Vertical, It's a Good Day: One Person's Traversing Through Cancer to Remission" (published by Balboa Press), chronicles his trials through the development of his cancer and shares his reflections to give an insider's perspective on surving cancer,.

In Berman's book, he candidly discusses his good days as well as his bad days living with cancer. He notes that the love and support of family and friends were vital as he faced adversity. Love and support, he states, won't cure the disease, but can empower an individual and make life worth living.

For those battling cancer, Berman hopes his story to beat the disease will serve as an inspiration. He feels that many never hear the positive stories after a cancer diagnosis is given, and that his story will show how an optimistic attitude can make any situation less daunting.

"This book is my daily effort to recognize that with the sun being up and me not lying in bed," Berman says, "it had to be a good day."
