Texas native Brett Burlison, an attorney and author, recently released "Riverside," his debut novel set in early 1990s Austin whose protagonist is a dyslexic University of Texas dropout with dreams of getting ahead. "Our hero, Bobby Patrick, is dyslexic, failed to get through college due to words on a page running 'every which direction, as if something big was chasing them,'" said Burlison, who suffered from dyslexia as a child. "Bobby's a landscaper, his girlfriend Katie, a waitress, and they weather various personal dramas in their small but sinister Austin social circle, and the city itself is very much a character in this book."

In fact, Burlison brings to life early '90s Austin with historical accuracy regarding nearly every place and location featured in the novel. "In Texas, people worship at the altar of Austin, and for good reason. It's a unique place," said Burlison, a former Austinite. "If you are 18-35 and don't live in Austin, you wish you did."

Bobby and Katie's early '90s Austin is comprised of drug dealers and thieves who have wealthy parents. However, the couple has goals of getting married, opening a restaurant and living the good life, a dream that is threatened by their unconventional lifestyle and a close friend mixed up in the drug trade. The friend, with whom Bobby has a secret history, needs his help, and the young couple's future is placed in peril as the plot grows thicker and the consequences more severe.

"Riverside" has been well received and reviewed favorably by Kirkus Reviews. It is available in print or ebook on Amazon.com and at BookPeople in Austin, 603 N. Lamar Blvd.
