Bookworks celebrates the inaugural Independent Bookstore Day today, May 2 with special promotions and author events.

Independent Bookstore Day draws on the success of 2014's California Bookstore Day with more than 400 stores taking part nationwide. The American Booksellers Association (ABA) is the national sponsor of Independent Bookstore Day, with all nine of the regional ABA sub-associations from coast to coast taking part. Local stores will feature special events and commemorative merchandise, giveaways, and promotions designed to celebrate independent bookselling and publishing. Bookworks will have for sale the Independent Bookstore Day tote bags.

"We're delighted with the enthusiasm that independent bookstores across the country are exhibiting about the Bookstore Day concept," said Northern California Independent Booksellers Association Executive Director Hut Landon. "The fact that all the regional associations have signed on underscores the evident appeal of what will effectively be a nation-wide celebration of independent bookselling May 2."

At Bookworks, events for both kids and adults are part of Independent Bookstore Day. At 10:30 am, Carolyn Meyer will talk about her new young adult book Diary of a Waitress. Diary of a Waitress tells the first-person story of Harvey Girl Kitty Evans, and her fellow waitresses Cordelia and Emmy. As Kitty writes about her escapades, a loveable teenager emerges; she embraces adventure, independence, her role as a Harvey Girl, and a freelance writing career. In this fast-paced novel, best-selling author Meyer, who has visited and researched Harvey Hotels, brings together an unforgettable heroine with the universal themes of friendship, identity, and young love.

At 3pm, Albuquerque mystery writer David Thurlo reads from the new book Grave Consequences, a new Charlie Henry mystery, and signs books. Henry, former Special Forces operative and newly minted pawnbroker, thinks that he's finally turned a corner toward the calm, quiet life he's always wanted, until a beautiful family heirloom, a turquoise necklace, enters his life and pawn shop.

As part of Independent Bookstore Day and Bookworks' 30th Anniversary, Bookworks is launching a new loyalty programto honor our regular patrons and event attendees. Customers can join the Book Brood for free, and receive a punch card to be stamped at Bookworks events. After attending ten events, customers will receive a 30% discount on a single purchase.

Bookworks also hosts a Blind Date with a Book promotion on May 2, where customers can choose a wrapped book based on genre to take home with them.
