Author Leah Follett's new book, "A Well-Fed Heart: Autistic to Artistic" (published by Balboa Press AU), is an empowering guidebook of recovery that features one family's approach to healing their family of autism, autoimmune disease, allergies, food intolerance, anxiety, cognitive and emotional impairments, gut dysfunction and other "normal" health concerns, such as poor immune function and weight fluctuation.

Follett wrote the book for the person she was six years ago, when she was looking for a well-researched source of information with practical application to demonstrate and inspire changes needed to guide her family to recover from their illnesses.

"This book was written as a directory of our important family milestones that shows and demonstrates failures and recoveries which may help others make a more emotionally sound and financially secure approach to healing," Follett says. "It also fosters a stronger understanding and bond of 'self' through self-love and community which leads to a more enlightened understanding of the world and the power held within."

Follett's perspective changed when her first-born son, William, developed health concerns, and in looking for answers, they discovered William was moderately autistic with an expressive and receptive language disorder. At the time of William's diagnosis, doctors started to suspect that there were similar health concerns with Follett's youngest child, Gabriel. This realization forced her to create an environment in which they could thrive. She created a low-chemical environment, adapted her old recipes to more nourishing nutrient-dense meals and followed a specialized lifestyle regime. She has healed many of her family's diagnosable symptoms of illness and imbalance.
