The Kansas City mob was always thought to be a small group, but by the early 1970s, the FBI realized that the mob (La Cosa Nostra) in Kansas City had run Las Vegas since World War II ended. The KC mob was more powerful than big name crime families in other cities including New York and Chicago. This fascinating and often dangerous mob life inspired Don Maddux to write "As the Crow Falls" (published by Xlibris).

This novel revolves around the character of Gregory Crow, a real estate mogul who joins forces with the mob. He and his brother Gerald are born into a world of real estate development and have grown up living in a world of extreme luxury. With the purchase of three small casinos in the early 1970s, they find themselves entering another world. While Gerald gets wrapped up in the mob life, Gregory feels trapped. As their inherited real estate company grows at an astronomical rate, that world collides with the world of the mob. Greg goes from a generally fun guy who likes to play and party, to a cynical, hateful person with a nearly suicidal level of alcohol and drug abuse in an attempt to hide from the reality of what he is involved in. As his original involvement with the mob is minimal from two brothers he has known since childhood who own a construction company, Greg also falls in love with the daughter of a mob boss. Although their relationship becomes rocky, their love is tested over and over again for decades. But after over three decades of trying to get out of the mob life while living it, Crow finally breaks his silence.

I have read mob stories and seen mob movies and I love those stories, but as I did the research for this book, I realized those mob stories I love seem to minimize the negatives and show the mob as glamorous. It is not glamorous. It is a violent life and almost guarantees a person's early death. Few people are ever able to leave that life."

"As the Crow Falls" will remind readers that there is also a good side to everyone, although deep down, everyone is capable of unspeakable violence if it means saving their own lives or those of their loved ones.
