Heart of rock and roll is not long for this world.

How long does cabaret need to keep at that gross in order to recoup? I can’t imagine they’ll be able to turn a profit in the span of Eddie’s run.

Does Beautiful Noise have discounts? They have an high average ticket price of $146 but only filled 55% of seats.

I’ve seen Heart of Rock & Roll and had a blast. I hope it finds its audience and gets its numbers up. 

Kudos to Cabaret. $238 average ticket price wow! 

Despite all these new productions on Broadway, I’m still amazed by Lion King and Wicked topping the weekly grosses.

There’s some early chatter that Lempicka and Rock and Roll are considering closing up on May 12. 

It’s only the start for Cabaret! I hope for it to be at/around $2 million for years to come. 

Remember that Radcliffe missed two performances of Merrily last week — still solid numbers despite the expected sizable drop.

I hate to see closures but Lempicka opens April 14th and Heart of Rock & Roll opens April 22nd. Reviews and Tony nominations will help but ultimately it’s word of mouth that will help boost its weekly grosses.

I haven’t seen Lempicka but have seen Heart of Rock and Roll and enjoyed it and would recommend it. I do think its marketing could be better. I watched the YouTube trailer from its San Diego stint starring Matt Doyle and Katie Rose Clarke and that video was better than any of the recent marketing I’ve seen for the show.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lempicka closes even sooner than that. Their numbers are BAD.

Me too. Unfortunately, word of mouth is nearly nonexistent for both of these shows, since the general public is unaware of either one. Insiders believe the two of them will be trashed for the most part and certainly won't be nominated for best musical (hence the closure talks). 

This being said — if Escape to Margaritaville can tour, then so can Heart of Rock and Roll. It feels like the kind of show that would do very well despite flopping in NY.

Heart of Rock & Roll may rally with its positive word of mouth coupled with good reviews, but yikes that average ticket price is not good. These houses are heavily discounted and papered.

If I were a producer on Lempicka, I would be extremely worried. Unlike Heart, its word of mouth is decidedly mixed. Suffs isn't off to a promising start either and is having similar problems with word of mouth.

I didn’t even need to look at the grosses to know HOR&R and Lempicka were in trouble. It seems everyone is trying to hock their tickets for their show on the Theatr app and I get notifications at least 5-6 times a day.

If I recall, both were late entries into the crammed season already and so transferring was a foolish move - LEMPICKA if they wanted to be seen as the artistic (no pun intended) darling and HEART if they wanted to scoop up the bridge & tunnel boomer crowd.

At an average ticket price of $108, there is no way that it is set to be a long runner.  The only way it becomes a long-runner is if it gets great reviews.  The fans of the two stars will have run their course fairly early in the run.  I know you are obsessed with the show, but you shouldn't let obsession get in the way of common sense.

On another note, I am really disappointed at the soft start of Patriots.  I saw it in London and thought it was a really terrific night in the theatre.

A question.  Even with DR out of Merrily, it sold out and had the fourth highest average ticket price.  I am still assuming that it will win Tony awards for Revival, Director, Actor and Supporting Actor at a minimum.  I doubt that LM will win, based on her attendance track record.  Coming fresh off of multiple Tony awards and (presumably) an entirely sold out run, doesn't it make sense to announce an extension around now.  i would imagine that there is a good chance that Groff and Mendez would extend; even if they did not, the producers can surely borrow a page from the Weissler's game plan and hire replacements who will generate some excitement.  Thoughts appreciated.

If it does extend, it will only be until around Labor Day. Romeo and Juliet has the Hudson in the future.

Mendez is pregnant, so her extending seems unlikely. Radcliffe was only out for two performances. Maybe they need to have both Groff and Radcliffe out to actually test its prospects.

Lots to digest this week.

Chicago - holy cow!

I'm impressed by Cabaret (not surprised), The Great Gatsby (sort of surprised) and Hell's Kitchen (very surprised).

I feel like The Notebook, The Outsiders and Suffs have their long term success predicated on Tony noms more than any other new shows.

I know it's incredibly early but I'm a little underwhelmed by that Stereophonic start.

I agree with those who think Heart of Rock n Roll has a better chance of rallying than Lempicka. But it's gonna need some good reviews and especially keep getting strong word of mouth. Lempicka is toast.

Don't forget, Stereophonic started one day earlier than initially announced on fairly short notice and filled that performance with very inexpensive tickets. That undeniably brought down both its box office total and average ticket price.

Easier said than done to get major stars to replace performances with THIS much acclaim.

Most people shouldn't want to touch it with a 10-foot pole.

If the replacements are on the name-level of Skylar Astin or Noah Galvin or Brandon Uranowitz (which is to say, a level below Groff & Radcliffe), that's not going to translate to ticket sales for a sustained amount of time.

SWEENEY has done better than anticipated but that property has more notoriety.

The show will return a tidy profit by the time it closes, and it may be more responsible to close it while they're on a high, instead of battling it out with replacements, lower grosses, and higher advertising costs. Considering Sonia Friedman's mixed financial track record of late, she should want to return as much money to her investors as humanly possible.

Stereophonic sold every seat to their first performance at $40 and had massively discounted preview tickets from the start. I don't know if it's going to smash it, but it's much too early to tell.

Lempicka and Heart of Rock and Roll seem like they're done already but I think many here had predicted that.

I think we'll have to see on the rest. W4E costs too much to run which gives Outsiders & Notebook a huge edge in outlasting it. From the (predominantly female) audience I sat in last Saturday, I don't think Suff's word of mouth is at all mixed in the real world. I've never seen people more engaged and excited by a show. They've clearly got a hill to climb though.

Once again, you never fail to set my teeth on edge with your takes. She's the producer behind mega-IP projects like Cursed Child and Stranger Things, as well as acclaimed ones (Stereophonic, Merrily). God forbid a producer actually try to champion interesting work and balance those with the cash cows.

Yes- lets extend a lesser known Sondheim show in an already extremely crowded season and potentially have it outshine smaller productions. Nice. Why can't we just let it be? Move on. Let it go out on a high note.

Since when is what effect a production could have on how other productions do ever a consideration of producers? This is a business.

A Beautiful Noise had a discount code through 4/7. So it just expired. They really need to keep that discount code up through the end of their run. Probably don't make it valid for the matinees.  Their matinees are now seeing between 80-60% capacity. Some of their weeknight shows are get 30-40% only. They still have 12 weeks left, let's see if they keep their June 30 closing date.
