In December I will have 1 night to bring my daughter to a show. She's seen a good amount of shows:

Wicked

Phantom

Mamma Mia

Fiddler on the Roof

Mary Poppins

Hairspray

I recently started a thread asking for opinions on myself seeing Dear Evan Hansen-would that be the best show to take her to. Would the Great Comet be better. I'd love to suggestions-thank you!

I saw The Secret Garden back in 1992 when I was 9 years old and loved it! It was my first Broadway show. I think she would like Matilda. I recall around that age I loved reading Roald Dahl books (i.e. Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, etc.)

Another vote for Matilda! It's a great show for smart young girls, if she can handle something a bit scary at times. I think she'll be fine if Phantom and Wicked were no problem.

Matilda is the best option. School of Rock is also a fun time.

I enjoyed The Great Comet at ART but if I had to choose between the two for that age group, it would Dear Evan Hansen. The social media/school aspects are topical and relevant. The interactive nature of The Great Comet would be be the biggest appeal, I'm not sure the story would quite resonate yet.

Thanks for some many responses! I should have mentioned Matilda will be playing at the Dr. Philips Orlando theatre-while not true Broadway I was kind of thinking I should take her to something besides that.

She saw a clip of School of Rock on the Tony's and was not interested.

But maybe we'll do either Matilda or Dear Evan Hansen. I'm just thinking Dear Evan Hansen is unique, she could see it with Benjamin Platt in it and maybe less likely to come to Orlando which is where we unfortunately live right now.

Matilda for sure!

I feel like Dear Evan Hansen would be way too much for her. It would probably be R-rated if it were a movie, as it deals directly with suicide, self-harm, depression, social anxiety, etc., along with a bevy of masturbation jokes and innuendos. It's a good show (not great imo) with catchy songs, talented actors, and, yes, a kid-friendly high school/social media setting, but it will probably be too much for her, whether the material goes over her head or not.

^ I was thinking the content might be too much, but then again it's been awhile since I've been 9 (not sure about you, whatdoesntkillme.)

If you're OK with maybe needing to have a conversation afterwards, Evan Hansen is a good bet.

Aladdin or Matilda for sure.

I think The Color Purple has some great themes that are important for women/girls of any age (female strength and loving yourself ).  There are some adult themes in it, but not sure what the appropriate age would be.

IMO, Evan Hansen is more age appropriate than The Color Purple...

I would still say Matilda even if the tour was going by you. The staging on tour does not compare to the Broadway staging.

It's been some time since my kids were 8 almost 9, but Dear Evan Hanson wouldn't be my choice - and I liked it.  I'm not really all that fussy about age appropriate but I just don't think this would be something she would appreciate.  The shows you listed don't give any indication that this show would be in her viewing choices/experience center.  And I know expanding horizons, etc etc.  But only you as her mother could truly evaluate the best choice.

I think it really depends on the maturity of your daughter, and your parenting style.  I have three daughters who are all pretty mature for their age.  They vary in age - both older and younger than yours .... they all saw Matilda on tour and the only one who really liked it was my youngest daughter who is a lot younger than yours. I am not bashing Matilda, I personally loved it.   My 10 year old saw Gentlemans Guide on tour and absolutely loved it, so it really depends on your daughter.  My guess is that if she is not interested in School of Rock, she may not like Matilda very much.

Regarding Dear Evan Hansen, most mature middle schoolers would like it, but as one poster said, you have to be ok with a good number of sexual jokes and heavy emotional themes and references.  Having seen it off Broadway, I would not take my 10 year old to it for that reason.

There is nothing inappropriate in Great Comet.  I would definitely take my two older daughters to see it - they would love it.  They are both artsy and creative, and would enjoy the show's unique staging and style.

I don't know if you are able to consider Hamilton, but if it was me, I would wait until the day of the show and try to get ticketmaster resale tickets the day of the show as the price drops toward show time. If that doesn't work, you could just walk up to the box office at Matilda, Cats, Great Comet, or DEH and buy something last minute.

I believe the material will a bit much for her and will most likely go over her head.

Per DEH website: DEAR EVAN HANSEN is recommended for ages 12 and older. Children under the age of four will not be permitted in the theatre.

I suggest: Aladdin, Matilda and CATS. My nieces 8-10 loved all 3!

Great Comet is not inappropriate but I think the themes would be missed by a kid that young.

Matilda without a doubt.  I think it's great for the adults as well.  See it on Broadway with the original set before it's gone.

I agree with Matilda, but Wicked is such a good show! It's really a "Broadway" show, it's sure to be remembered
