I don't know who he is so I'm judging differently as from someone who watched the voice. He looks extremely old for the part. He looks like a who from the Grinch. & I don't like his voice.
He's the modern day version of Johnny Whitaker. I guess this sounds superficial...but he looks....plain.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
See, I don't think Matthew James Thomas is cute, adorbs, or any of that. So ... hot is all relative. Not that I think this guy is hot, but just saying. I don't think the 'hotness' factor of Pippin matters. It just has to be someone you, as the audience, cares about.
I'm no saying Pippin is Ibsen or anything, or that this guy will be any good, but it's sad that the standards for being good in this role apparently are looking good shirtless.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I think there are too many cruel, unnecessary comments here. The fact that he doesn't look like a member of a boy band will/should allow the audience to stop concentrating on tan lines and hopefully respond to his performance-not his looks.
There's comments someone can make for a laugh and then there's some of the stuff up here. I joined these boards years ago under another name and left because of crude things had become. I know we all have opinions, I myself don't think he's that exciting, but we don't need to put down others to make that point clear.
There's an audience for all types of performers-Susan Boyle, Andre Rieu etc etc so what does it matter what their backround or how they got to where they are now. Some sleep with the producer others come from a reality show but they are all earing a living because people are willing to pay to see them perform.
He really seems to be reaching on the lower notes and his throat looks like it's under a little stress. His voice is perfectly serviceable, but it'll be interesting to see how it holds up under the 8 shows a week schedule.
No one gives a damn about the list of shows you've seen.
mjohnson2 what the **** I am sorry what were you thinking. What an outragious statement. He won the Voice got four turns he can sing. Is he Broadway meterial maybe not but he does have talent. Even if he had a disability it sounds like you are saying something for no reason but to bully.
