In an exclusive music video shared by PEOPLE, Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo perform the title song from the upcoming Broadway revival of The Color Purple.

Hudson will make her Broadway debut in the musical in the role of Shug Avery, while Erivo takes on the role of Celie.

"I've read the book, I've seen the film and I loved the original production on Broadway!" Hudson tells PEOPLE, calling Alice Walker's book "a timeless piece of American culture."

Says the 33-year-old, "The story holds a special place in my heart because, in part, it's so honest. All of the characters are true to who they are. Each individual is an integral part of the message and it brings a complex emotion that sticks with the audience."

Commenting on making her Broadway debut, the Oscar winner admits that she is "very nervous". "I try to feel the butterflies before any big performance as much as I can," she says. "That sensation makes me feel alive and it keeps me on my toes. For me, nerves have always been a good thing, they make the experience exciting."

THE COLOR PURPLE, directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, will begin preview performances on Tuesday, November 10 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre (242 West 45th street) and will officially open on Thursday, December 10.

ISAIAH JOHNSON (The Merchant of Venice, Peter and the Starcatcher) will play the role of 'Mister;' JOAQUINA KALUKANGO (Encores! Wild Party, Holler If Ya Hear Me) will appear as 'Nettie;' and KYLE SCATLIFFE (LES MISERABLES) will take on the role of 'Harpo' opposite the previously announced JENNIFER HUDSON, CYNTHIA ERIVO, and DANIELLE BROOKS in this acclaimed staging from London'sMenier Chocolate Factory. CYNTHIA ERIVO is appearing with the support of Actors' Equity Association. The Producers gratefully acknowledge Actors' Equity Association for its assistance of this production.
