The Regent Theatre and New Vic Theatre Join Forces for Chernobyl Children

On Friday 5th August 2016 The Regent Theatre and New Vic Theatre will be working together to create a special day for young people on a recuperative holiday from Chernobyl.

The Education and Creative Learning teams are planning a theatre experience day onThe Regent Theatre stage that will give the young people an insight into being an actor for the day.

The theatre day is part of an exciting and extensive programme of activity by Chernobyl Children's Project (UK). The charity supports children, families and young people in Belarus, the country worst affected by the 1986 Nuclear Disaster. There are many local groups across the UK with host families who provide a month long holiday for the children; this Theatre day is collaboration with Stafford and Stone's local group. The group host children who are all in remission from cancer. They stay with host families locally and enjoy lots of activities which the group plan together.

Diane Crook from the Local Group says: "There are still many children living in tiny rural villages, sometimes just a few miles from the Chernobyl plant. These children may not be ill yet, but their future is bleak if they continue to live in such a radioactive environment. A happy, healthy holiday in the summer may give them a better chance."

The day starts for the young people at Stage door, they'll be shown to their dressing rooms and then tour the theatre's backstage areas. They'll have a drama workshopwith practitioner Abi Crayon, dance workshop with artist Caroline Sherratt and also be taken through how a producing theatre works with a design workshop by Jill Rezzanofrom New Vic Theatre's Education team.

Paul Adams, Creative Learning Manager at The Regent Theatre says: "The theatres are really happy to be involved in such an important programme that has such a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of young people from Belarus. I know both organisations have dedicated programmes centred on providing young people with opportunities to learn and develop in their lives; it's great to extend this to the young people visiting Stoke-on-Trent from Belarus."
