'The Lynching of Ladies' Memoir is Released

The word Invictus literally means unconquered or unbowed. It is usually used in sentences that describe a person of great willpower or endurance. And throughout the years the word Invictus has been immortalized in great poems and events to symbolize the indomitable will of the human spirit. The author Jo Ann Poole Mason's new book has captured that same essence of Invictus.

"The Lynching of Ladies" is the first in a trilogy of memoirs about the lives of two young African- American girls, Casey and Arianna who have been best friends since childhood. In many ways, both girls are the same. Both are carefree, they are both sixteen years old and both have an optimistic view on life. That is until Casey is brutally raped by a gang of neighborhood hoodlums, and Arianna in trying to save her friend was also raped in the process. After this traumatizing event, the lives of both girls are turned upside down. Wishing for Justice Casey goes to the authorities for help, but instead of sympathy, their ordeal is greeted with disbelief and scorn, leading them to experience social, emotional, and physical lynching's throughout their young lives. And throughout their trials and ordeals, the strength of both girls are put to the test. The sensitive Arianna dresses herself in a coat of self-loathing and defeat while Casey coats herself in a hard facade of tenacity and perseverance, promising herself that she will never be conquered by the harshness of the social stigma surrounding her. The author captures the feelings of outrage and despair of both characters, and yet also infusing them with an indomitable spirit that can't help but be admired.

About the Author
Ms. Jo Ann Poole Mason was born on Valentine's Day 1953 to Walter and Helen Poole and is the fourth of six children. She received her masters and bachelor's degrees from Indiana University in the early seventies. Through a long and illustrious career she has garnered numerous awards and positions. She was the first African American deputy commander in Germany. She was Woman of Year and awarded the Command Civilian Award for Valor. Ms. Mason is the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Award, Joint Meritorious Award, Hidden Hero Award, and the Air Force Angel Award, among many others. Ms. Mason has studied four foreign languages to include Spanish, French, German, and Korean. She has lived in England, Korea, and Germany.
