A famous saying goes, "A friend in time of need is a friend indeed." That is the central theme of author Deborah Rutter's first book as she tells children about the insightful story of "Mike and Friends." In this endearing tale, children are all invited to witness an amazing friendship where friends help each other not only during good times but during danger as well. "Mike and Friends" follows the life of a young mouse and his three friends as they escape the claws of one sneaky cat by helping each other.

Mike the Mouse lives happily with his family in a hole in the garden. He loves to lie among the flowers in the sunshine, to sleep and dream of wonderful things. Mike has friends he shares the garden with. Sam the Sparrow is Mike's best friend in the whole world, Lil the Ladybird is the one who tickles his toes with her antennas, making him laugh, and William the Worm is the very wise friend who always gives Mike good advice. They play and talk together all the time.

Yet one day, as they play, they have wandered too far from Mike's hole. And as they were too busy enjoying each other's company, they did not notice that Clyde the cat sneakily climbed over the fence to cross the garden and has been eyeing Mike for quite some time now. When Sam saw him, they all warned Mike and told him to run. Mike ran and eventually dropped himself inside their family hole just in the nick of time.

As readers will read on, they will see a brilliant display of friendship as the four friends defended each other and risked their lives for one another. An inspiring story that is a good example for children, "Mike and Friends" is a totally recommended read. The first in a series of colorful and enjoyable read, everyone is encouraged to grab a copy of this title and the upcoming ones!
