musical Li'l Abner, for which he won a Theatre World Award. He was cast in the same role in the movie version. His Li'l Abner role brought him a guest appearance on NBC's The Ford Show, Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford.
Palmer also appeared on Broadway in Lorelei opposite Carol Channing. He had a recurring role as Sergeant James Bustos, a former Confederate States of America soldier, in the ABC military-western seriesCuster and as Oscar Heinz on The Kallikaks.

Palmer appeared in numerous television shows, including: Dallas, Brothers, Simon & Simon, M*A*S*H, Fantasy Island, Tabitha, Three's Company, Quincy M.E. , Code R, The Rockford Files, EMERGENCY!, Lancer, Love American Style, The Jackie Gleason Show and more.
