We don't know whether it will be once upon this December, but BroadwayWorld is excited to report the new musical ANASTASIA is coming to Broadway during the 2016-17 season.

Stage Entertainment USA (Sister Act, Rocky) and Tom Kirdahy (It's Only A Play, The Visit) announced today they will produce the show at a Shubert Theatre to be named.

The new musical reunites the Tony Award-winning writers of the Broadway classic Ragtime: book writer Terrence McNally, composer Stephen Flaherty, and lyricist Lynn Ahrens. Darko Tresnjak, Tony Award-winner for Best Direction of a Musical for A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, will direct, and Peggy Hickey (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder) will choreograph.

The musical is currently in rehearsals for its world premiere at Hartford Stage, where it is playing an extended run from May 12th through June 19th. Christy Altomare is starring as Anya and Derek Klena is playing Dmitry, the coveted romantic leads in ANASTASIA in Connecticut; no word on whether they will transfer with the show when it heads to New York City.

From the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, the new musical, ANASTASIA, is the romantic and rousing story of a brave young woman attempting to discover the mystery of her past while finding a place for herself in the rapidly changing world of a new century. The new musical is inspired by the Twentieth Century Fox Motion Pictures.

ANASTASIA will feature beloved songs from the 1997 film, including Ahrens and Flaherty's Oscar- nominated "Journey to the Past," as well as an entirely new score from the Tony Award-winning team.
