In celebration of a gift of over 100 photographs, the National Portrait Gallery will open "Yousuf Karsh: American Portraits" on Friday-the museum's first exhibition devoted entirely to this internationally recognized photographer.
"[Karsh] not only had the uncanny ability to amplify a person's character, but also offered everyday people the opportunity to glimpse into the private lives of the men and women who shaped the 20th century." -Kim Sajet, Director
Karsh sat down with and photographed distinguished Americans who excelled in fields as diverse as business, medicine, entertainment and politics.
Among the portraits to be included are those of artist Georgia O'Keeffe, physician and virologist Jonas Salk, singer Marian Anderson, businesswomanElizabeth Arden, architect I.M. Pei and First LadyEleanor Roosevelt.
This exhibition will be presented in two installations: the first from Nov. 8 through April 27, 2014; and the second from May 2 through Nov. 2, 2014.
